PDX Summer School Mission:

PDX Summer School provides instruction from highly qualified teachers to ensure that English language learning students from low-income schools maintain and enhance their academic skills and confidence. We believe education lies at the heart of a healthy society. We envision a community where all children receive the education they need to be successful.

The position:

The duration of this part-time, temporary position is July 13th, 2015- August 14th, 2015, with several hours of preparation and wrap-up outside of the defined timeframe.

The Program Director has lead responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of the PDX Summer School program. The Program Director will participate in the hiring, training and supervision of up to 8 teachers and assistant teachers.

General time expectations:

1. Teaching: Half-day, M-F during the 5 weeks of the program (July 13th - August 14th)

2. 10 hours of interviewing and hiring prior to beginning of program

3. 10 hours of prep and training prior to the program

4. 10 hours email and communication with teachers, assistants and board of directors

Essential Job Responsibilities and Outcomes:

Implement the PDX Summer School program model, aimed at accelerating academic achievement and providing access to enrichment activities for low-income, rising first-six grade Emerging Bilingual students.

Job responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Hire, train and supervise teachers and assistant teachers
  • Finalize, distribute and ensure efficacy of curriculum
  • Schedule school day (interventions, specials, recess)
  • Manage student discipline
  • Ensure an ambitious attendance protocol
  • Coordinate and provide reading intervention strategies
  • Coordinate volunteers
  • Plan/lead assemblies and field trip

Core Competencies and Qualifications:

Minimum Education Required:

  • BA/BS in education or relevant course of study
  • Current and accredited teaching license

Minimum Experience Required:

  • 5 years' experience teaching in relevant field/s: teaching, supervision, non-profit, administration, working with children or other relevant experience
  • Experience working collaboratively with school administrators and teachers
  • Mastery of concepts of English language learning
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal to inform varying audiences
  • Experience administering DIBELS and/or easyCBM assessments
  • Supervisory experience
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Equity: Demonstrate awareness, attitudes, knowledge and skills that foster a climate of equality and inclusion.
  • Initiative: Takes ownership of work, does what is needed without being asked, uses multiple strategies to support a student's success, regularly asks questions specific to accelerating student achievement.
  • High Standards: Is driven to achieve a standard of excellence with our work and outcomes.
  • Compliance: Honors PDX Summer School and school district policies.
  • Delights in children: Is responsive, creative and flexible to a child's academic and behavioral needs.

  • Work with small reading groups
  • Assist with preparation of teaching materials
  • Assist with facilitation breakfast
  • Playground duty
